In this modern and fast era, the millennial generation is overshadowed by health problems. No doubt this problem is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. Especially those who work in offices.
The increasing development of technology does not necessarily mean that human lifestyles will move in a better direction.
According to research conducted by Basic Health Research (Riskesdas). Diabetes cases in Indonesia have increased from 6.9 percent in 2013 to 8.5 percent in 2018. With 90-95 percent being cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM).
This research proves that the millennial generation is experiencing health problems. The disease that attacks them is generally type 2 DM. A disease that was previously identified with the disease of the elderly. Now, many cases of type 2 DM are found in the young adult age group.
In fact, another study in 2020 showed that complications of type 2 DM ย in the mid-20s experienced an alarming increase. They were diagnosed with symptoms of type 2 DM since they were teenagers.
โWe donโt have the numbers yet, but there is a tendency (to move to younger ages).โ Explained by sports medicine specialist Dr. Rachmad Wishnu Hidayat in Cities Changing Diabetes (CCD) at Yarsi University, Jakarta in 2019.
Of course this doesnโt happen overnight. According to Wishnu, diabetes tendencies occur due to unhealthy lifestyles in the millennial generation. This includes regulating diet and exercise habits.
Unhealthy Lifestyle
Nowadays, we come across many fast food stalls with heavy portions but poor nutrition. As a result, they eat excess calories. This can lead to overweight and obesity, which is one of the factors causing type 2 DM.
Apart from that, the millennial generation lacks motivation to exercise. A common reason is because there is no time. In fact, exercise doesnโt have to be done vigorously. Just 30 minutes per day. Even then, it can be done anywhere.
For example, 10 minutes in the morning before going to work. Then, continue for 10 minutes during the day, and another 10 minutes at night when you get home from work. Itโs not difficult, as long as there is the intention to do it.
Innovation for Diabetes Survivors
The large number of diabetes sufferers in Indonesia has made Windi Intan Puspitasari a solo citizen. Innovating to create foot ulcer protectors for diabetics. His creation succeeded in getting him into the top 150 of the Diplomat Success Challenge (DSC) XI entrepreneurial program in 2020.
The woman who is often called Intan said that the idea to make foot protectors started when she saw a diabetes patient waiting in line. At that time, the patientโs leg was already injured and only wrapped in a plastic bag.
This moved Intan to help other diabetes patients. Intan, who has a sewing background, began to introduce her ideas to her friends. In fact, he also asked for advice from experts in the medical field.
Finally, Intan succeeded in making a foot ulcer protection product which she called Diacare. Intan hopes that in the future the products she produces can help even more diabetes sufferers. This product is sold for IDR 150,000 in all sizes.
